Great Egret

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.  Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

    Great Egrets are beautiful white water birds with long legs and long S-curved necks.  Early in the breeding season adults grow long plumes on their backs.  They raise these special feathers during their courtship displays.  These white plumes were prized as adornments for ladies’ hats in the late nineteenth century.  As a result, Great Egrets were hunted nearly to extinction.  Thankfully, laws were enacted to protect birds from being killed for their feathers.
    How we appear on the outside is not important to God.  Instead, God focuses on the qualities of our hearts which are reflected in our actions.  If we are faithful, loving, kind, gentle, helpful, patient and generous then we are truly beautiful.
